Robert Hobson is a Recording Studio Engineer, Musician and Private Music Tutor residing in Leeds, West Yorkshire. He is an ex-member of technical grind band Executive Distraction Tasks, and is currently writing music with hvíldarlauss dauðr as well as playing in various jazz settings.
Graduating with a Mathematics degree at the University of Leeds in 2003, Rob went on to study Music Production and Sound Recording at Leeds College of Music in 2005. Rob is also an accomplished musician, learning Classical piano as a child, through to studying Jazz guitar with fusion guitarist, Tom Quayle.
Rob's approach to recording is thorough, patiently working with the musicians to get the best from their playing, and taking great care at the tracking stage to capture source sounds that are representative of the finished product. This allows mixing to be left as a solely creative element, not hindered by "fixing in the mix" and having to correct takes that don't meet Rob's standard.
"I know that I can occasionally push people quite hard when tracking, but I strongly believe that a good take needs to be captured quickly to retain the natural feel of the music. It starts to sound sterile if we do too many takes."
Although he doesn't see himself as a "producer", Rob frequently adds his own thoughts and expertise into every recording he does, from demo recordings through to professionally recorded albums.
"These days, many people can quite easily record themselves at home with a couple of mics and a computer. But having an outside perspective from someone experienced, who understands the artist's music, and understands how to capture and enhance those sounds is the benefit of coming to the studio. It can truly help to transform your music to the next level."
